Saint Philip's Music Director
Hello, I am Paul Utgoff, Music Director at Saint Philip's, which
includes being organist and choir director. I assist the
rector in offering music
that is integral to worship. This involves recommending suitable
selections,
and then facilitating those who actually render the music. The
hymns and ordinaries are sung prayers, offered by the congregation and
choir. During the anthem, the choir provides spiritual leadership. The prelude helps the listener to prepare
for worship, just as the postlude affords a moment to reflect on
what has transpired. From time to time, musicians from our
congregation offer their special gifts. My first service at Saint
Philip's was November 20, 2005.
My undergraduate degree is in music, with a major in pipe organ
(Oberlin Conservatory, 1974). My teachers in pipe organ have been
John
Woodworth, Garth Peacock, George Damp, Margaret Irwin-Brandon, and
Larry Schipull. I have also studied harpsichord with Fenner
Douglas and Margaret Irwin-Brandon. Meg Irwin-Brandon has been
especially helpful in my musical development in recent years. I
am a member of the American Guild of Organists.
