SPIRITUAL MINUTE - DECEMBER 23, 2007

  JANET A. GALLENSTEIN

I was very moved the Sunday after Thanksgiving when Liz and Paul spoke about the Spiritual Minute.  I had been gently asked a few times to give my own spiritual minute, however, I always had a reason not to do so.  When Liz spoke she addressed all of my reasons.

My spirituality is a very personal thing for me.  It’s something I try to live out privately.  I don’t enjoy speaking in “public”.  I have a 50 hour work week including my commute and I truly want Sundays to be a day of rest.  I prefer not having to prepare for Sunday worship.

So, why am I up here?  I love St Philip’s.  I have never understood why St Philip’s does not overflow with more people.  St Philip’s has been a blessing in my life.  I am up here to give witness to God’s love in my life so that others know how I feel about God and our small parish.

Liz and Paul’s introduction to the Spiritual Minute made me pause that very morning and hear God ask me, “Why Don’t You Give Witness More Often to My love?”  This is not the first time I have heard God ask me that question.  During our service, when asked for the prayers of the people, I used to keep my petitions for prayers to myself.  It took me months but slowly, I have tried to give more witness to my acknowledgement of God’s love by saying my petitions out loud in a low voice.  When I heard God ask me again to give witness with a Spiritual Minute, it was something I wanted to do.

I have people in my life who suffer and I have wondered if I should share with them about my spiritual connection with God.  My belief is that God is aware of them and He will come to them in His time.  I do know God will let me know what, if anything, I am to do differently.  He moved me slowly to today’s Spiritual Minute.  I’m sure he’ll move me again slowly to wherever it is he’s moving me to.

Thank-you
